In my earlier blog for CISE on the UK’s 2015 general election, I noted how uncertain the polls were, with none of the two main British parties – Conservative or Labour - able to make a decisive break prior to polling day. I ended by suggesting that there was likely to be an investigation into the polling industry after election day. One of those predictions came true. Unfortunately for the reputation of political science predictions, it was that there will be an inquiry into the performance of the polling industry.

An unenviable victory for the red-green block in the Swedish Parliamentary elections

The Swedish Social Democratic Party (S) showed in last week’s general election how to win, without being much of a winner. The party did receive the most votes (31 %), and together with the other two opposition parties on the left – the Left party (V) (5,7 %) and the Greens (Mp) (6,9 %) – the red-green parties garnered 43,6 percent of the vote share. Austria 2017: conflict mobilization in a reconstructing political landscape
On the 15th of October 2017, Austrian voters are called to the polls to elect a new parliament (Nationalrat). The snap elections were called immediately after Sebastian Kurz, the 31-year-old minister of foreign affairs succeeded Reinhold Mitterlehner as leader of the Christian democratic People’ s Party (ÖVP) in May 2017. Kurz’s leadership and a new party brand (“The new People’s party”) lead to an enormous ascent in the polls for the party. As of today, less than a week before the election, Kurz’s way to the Austrian chancellorship appears to be rather sure.

Dopo avere presentato le prossime elezioni legislative per la House of Reprentatives, in questo articolo ci concentriamo sulle competizioni per il Senato. Queste segneranno il centenario dell’elezione diretta dei Senatori. Fino al 1914, infatti, erano selezionati attraverso la procedura prevista originariamente della Costituzione, ovvero venivano eletti indirettamente dagli organi legislativi degli Stati.
